Wall St Journal: Speedy Small Cap Stocks
Orlie Kraus from the Wall St Journal and I are long time collaborators and it was nice to start the year with an assignment for her about small cap stocks finally outperforming large cap stocks for a first time in many years. The image was for print and also had to be designed to work in vertical and horizontal formats for mobile devices. The idea of small race cars outracing a larger car was the perfect opportunity to play with different colors and create an optimistic start for the new year.
Liberty Magazine: The Wandering Day
Bryan Gray at Liberty Magazine called requesting an illustration for a fascinating article about the movement to modernize the calendar in the post WW1 era. There was great interest to modernize the calendar and some proposals removed the concept of weekends which caused an uproar in the religious world. Using the phases of the moon seemed a perfect metaphor for a debate about days and provided a perfect element to show different ideas for the modern calendar.
Golf Digest: Rules
Golf Digest is one of my favorite clients since it’s an opportunity to mix pleasure with work and Art Director Chloe Galkin recently called for the Rules section. Golf is famous for its myriad of rules and it’s fun to learn the proper play for many situations which seem to apply to me. This illustration is about the fairness of a parter providing visual help if your sight to the hole is impeded. I’m pretty sure the Rule’s gig is the Golf gods way of keeping me on the straight and narrow.
Happy Holidays
Iammama.com: Picture Stories
Iammamma.com and I have started an exciting new collaboration. I will provide picture stories on a regular basis for their “Picture Story Time by James Yang” section. Iammama is a site for moms with tips for healthier eating, beauty and creative education. The site is based in Hong Kong and targeted towards moms in China, Hong Kong, and Japan. My first story for children is about eggs because who doesn’t love eggs? Hopefully this will be a long and rewarding relationship for both of us.
New York Times: Can you afford Diversion?
Corinne Myller is one of my favorite AD’s at the New York Times and she called with a great interactive project about the judicial maze a person navigates if they have committed a minor crime. The feature is presented as an interactive quiz which takes you through your options based on various factors and it’s an eye opening experience to how the justice system works. One of the editors had a great metaphor that the system is like Charlie Chaplin’s movie, “Modern Times” which became the inspiration for the illustration series. Interactive seems to be the brave new world for presenting information. I’m a fan.
Below: spots for the feature. Not all spots were used but it made for a great series.
American Educator: Stopping Bullies
A very timely assignment hit my desk from AD Jennifer Berney for American Educator magazine. The feature was methods for teachers to quickly identity and stop bullying behavior in the classroom at the beginning. The editors wanted to make sure I caught the dynamics of bullying without demonizing the bully since part of teaching is also altering the behavior of the bully. I approached it from a more instructional point of view which seemed the right feel for this feature. It’s always a pleasure to work with one of my oldest clients.
This focused on protecting students from cyber bullying.
Recognizing bullying behavior.
