PlanSponsor Magazine: Getting to a Better Place

Cover for PlanSponsor Magazine for a feature about improving your current situation.  Creative Director SooJin Buzelli and I have worked for so long she almost knows me better than I know myself. An earlier version of this cover was too complex and SooJin reminded me the strength of my approach is the simplicity with impact. Her notes were spot on and we were really happy with the final result.

Rachael Ray Holiday Gift Guide

Art Director Phoebe Flynn Rich has been a long time friend and it was a pleasant surprise when she called with a project for Rachael Ray’s Holiday Gift Guide. She wanted illustrations which incorporated gifts a photographer shot products based on sketches for various sections. The main idea was a winter cast of characters in various holiday settings. This was a new experience using illustration with photos and it was a relief when it worked out even better as planned. I owe Phoebe a drink for pushing my work in a new direction.

The Milken Institute Review: Collapsing Worlds

Series for Milken Review about universal wage insurance for workers who lose their jobs in the new world. AD Joannah Ralston allowed for my ideas to determine the layouts and we decided the metaphor of blocks could be used in a fun way to tell the story of destruction and rebuilding. While blocks may seem an obvious solution, there is always a way to show an idea with a different twist. This turned out to be one of the funnest projects of the year.

Parents Magazine: Icky things

Parents Magazine: Icky things on your kids

Parents magazine has become one of my favorite clients with fun assignments which are right up my alley. AD Emily Fulani requested illustrations for a feature about the icky bugs and rashes your children bring home. It was a great opportunity to create expressions as children are suddenly afflicted with rashes and itches. Much thanks to Emily for an assignment which seems perfect to share the day after Halloween.

New York Times: Bottled Water or Tap?

New York Times: Bottled Water or Tap?

Interactive Matt Ruby called with a fun assignment for the Science section. He needed an illustration which showed the various impact using bottled water has on the environment for an interactive quiz. The piece needed to work as an opener and elements needed to also be used for grading your impact on the environment. Sometimes the best solution is the simplest and Matt’s suggestion we show the various impact a bottle has dropping in water seemed perfect. The interactive quiz was both fun and enlightening. My impact was the third worse with a splash so I need to lay off buying bottled water.

Bostonia Magazine: Uber Everywhere

Bostonia Magazine: Uber Everywhere

Fun series for Bostonia Magazine about the many new services offered by Uber. Ronn Campisi is one of my favorite designers. He’s great at understanding the strength each illustrator brings to the table and uses this to his advantage. This assignment required a sense of unity without being monotonous and ideas needed to be simple and catch the essence of each service. In other words, it was a project right up my alley.
