Parents Magazine 2017 Car Guide
Parents Magazine has become a favorite client and it’s a good day when AD Emily Fulani calls. It’s an even better day when she asked for a fun series of illustrations about cars for the 2017 edition of the Car Guide. We decided on a playful approach with the idea that the car you pick is the car that shines above the rest.
Brown Alumni Magazine: Writing bilingually
Art Director Lisa Sergi from Brown University called with essay by Maxim Shrayer titled “Writing in Tongues”. It about the struggle to find your voice as a writer in a new country and new language. Maxim grew up in the Soviet Union and had to learn how to use a new language but integrate his past to create his voice as a writer. Water is always a great metaphor for reflection and this image simply caught the idea of being caught between two experiences.
Smithsonian Magazine: The Whole World
I love when Smithsonian Magazine calls. They always have smart features and AD Heather Palmateer’s assignment was no exception. It was an essay about how our ability to navigate the world is affected by hi tech maps. While map apps are convenient, our ability to read physical maps or signs have diminished. Mrs Yang and I are still amazed that we used to use physical maps to travel. My idea was taking a Lewis and Clark metaphor and turning it a more universal image about tech and exploring the world.
iammama.com: Cheese Likes You
iammama.com has been a wonderful experience this year. Not only have we already won multiple awards for The Egg Story, but the chance to create mini stories has been a great opportunity to sharpen the storytelling skills. Here is the latest story about cheese. Kesta Chan has been an excellent designer to work with and I love the fonts she sets in Chinese and Japanese.
Chronicle of Higher Education: Humility among Arrogance
The Christian Century: Connecting with Prisoners
The Christian Century called with a cover assignment for a ministry which is growing for many parishes. Relationships are being formed with prisoners by letters and the feature talks about how the ministry has opened eyes for both members and prisoners. It’s a delicate subject matter but thought It would be nice to use mail as a metaphor for the “connection” between two very different experiences. Dan Richardson, AD.
Habitat Magazine: Chasing down fees.
It’s been a good year for picking up new clients. Chad Townsend called for Habitat Magazine which is a New York based magazine for the co-op and condo community. Chad is an enthusiastic art director when it comes to illustration so it was very easy to say yes when he called. His assignment was a story about techniques for chasing down tenants who have not paid condo or coop fees. I imagine keeping track can feel like herding cats so a metaphor of “herding birds” from a city rooftop seemed like a playful image to show a frustrating problem. Sometimes the best ideas are metaphors which are “incorrectly” remembered.
